Personal

Niko was born 23.6.1988 in Lieto South Western part of Finland. His family consists of Mom, Dad and a little sister, not one of them can sail but the family has always had a summer cottage in Finnish archipelago where Niko also started training on his own optimist dinghy.

Niko started sailing in 2000 in an optimist class. It all started when Niko visited a boatshow in Turku with his dad and a friend. There Niko and his friend decided to take part in a ”basics of sailing”-course which took place in the summer. At that time Minna Aalto was the headmistress of the sailing school. Minna is well-known in Finland as an Olympic surfer.

After a few years in optimist class Niko grew up and was too tall and heavy for the boat class so he decided to changed it to Laser Radial. Niko won the Finnish ranking series in Laser Radial in 2005. After that he competed in Laser Standard for two years.

In 2007 Niko failed to get in to Economic school in Turku and he took a year off. The year off led him to a big sailing trip. Trip Started from Kokkola with Nautor Swan 60” boat witch he sailed to Las Palmas, Canary Islands. In Canaries he changed boat to Moody 64” witch took him all the way down to Antarctica. Coming up the Drake they broke the boat and it took several months to repair it. So in 2008 Niko came back to Finland to do the compulsory military service where he was also injured. Since that he has been sailing with 2.4mR

Niko started a paralympic campaign in 2010 towards London 2012 and he qualified Finland to the games in 2011 and made his dream to come true. Niko was the youngest sailor in London finishing on 12.

In Future Niko is aiming to Rio 2016 paralympic games, but before that he is going to study in Vaasa University industrial engineering and management.
